Inspired by early modernism.

In this section you will find some images and text describing Ian’s process for designing and creating his modernist inspired cabinet, Lelló. It will take though some of the initial sketches and brainstorming done by Ian all the way up to pictures of the cabinet being made in the workshop.

From Ideation to Concept Development.

  • Ideation.

As with all of Ian’s work, the design work starts on paper. In this section you can explore a selection of pages featuring sketches Ian generated for Lelló.

  • Concept Development.

After taking the idea as far as it can go on paper Ian’s process moves into the 3D space, usually in the form of rough sketch models. This helps visualize the piece from all angles and understand the positive and negative space surrounding the object.

From Computer Models to a Completed Piece.

  • CAD Rendering.

Once the final form has been decided this is usually where Ian would create the piece on a 3D modelling/CAD software package. In this section you can see some of the computer renderings generated of Lelló which helped influence the final colours of the design.

  • In the Workshop.

This gallery contains some images of Lelló as it was being made by Ian in the workshop. You can follow along and see how he turns several boards of London Plane into a truly bespoke and one off piece of furniture.
