The Mark Ia. Lounge Chair
The Mk. Ia (1a) takes inspiration from the Spitfires which defended the UK during the Battle of Britain. Some of these aircraft featured a black and white wing on their underside. This was to help the British ground troops identify the friendly fighters from the Axis fighters. One of these aircraft (N3200) is still air worthy after being restored to flying condition and not lives in the Duxford Air Museum.
This variant of chair comes in an ebonised and then inked finish. Similarly to the Mk. Vb chairs, the oak and sweet chestnut both have a very high tannin content. By leaving some very fine wire wool in a jar of white vinegar for up to 24 hours and brushing it onto the timber it reacts with these tannin’s. The timber initially turns a very dark blue, which over time eventually darkens to black. This is what is traditionally called “ebonising”. Once the chair has been ebonised, it is then given a final coat of Indian Ink. This ensure the chair turns its jet black colour. Over time the ink will eventually start to fade (as all stains normally do) and reveal the ebonised timber below. This should allow the chair to keep its black colour for years to come.
Finally the chair is then finished with a natural wax oil, which should allow the chair to patina and age gracefully.
