The Mark V Lounge Chair - The Prototype
This particular chair is a one of a kind as it was the original production prototype made by Ian. The backrest of this chair, and the others in the series was inspired by the Mk. V Spitfires that featured a clipped wing. This was to improve the aircraft’s low altitude performance as well as its roll rate.
The Mk. V lounge chair is made from English Sweet Chestnut and rather than use a natural wax oil, which is normally used on the other chairs, this chair has been given a traditional danish soap finish. Although this finish is not as durable as a wax oil, it is very easy to apply, it is completely VOC (volatile organic compounds) free and can be applied without gloves or a respirator. This makes it very easy to reapply throughout its life. The soap finish gives the paler sweet chestnut a lovely matte finish and does not “yellow” the timber like most oils do.
