Taking inspiration from a love of flight.

Take a look through this section to see how Ian created his Spitfire Chair series which have been both Swift and Swallows as well as the World War 2 war plane, the Submarine Spitfire.

From Ideation to Concept Development.

  • Ideation.

Unlike other projects Ian did not spend as long sketching ideas for this chair series. He felt that chairs want to live in a 3D landscape and shouldn’t be confined to a flat media such as a page in a sketch pad. He did however explore basic forms and postures and in this section we share some of sketches.

  • Concept Development.

A large part of Ian’s process for making the chairs and ensuring that they were comfortable involved making full scale models of the chair. Each of these models had a specific purpose. Some were simply to get the proportions while others were to hone the manufacturing process. In this section you can see some of the models and how they evolved into the finished chairs.

  • In the Workshop.

In this gallery you can see how Ian made the limited edition Carbon Negative version of the chair.
